Custom furniture begins with questions that have little to do with style labels. Who uses the room every day? How do they sit? What needs to be stored? Which view should remain open? What already belongs to the family? These answers are more valuable than arriving with a catalogue and asking the client to choose.
A good studio makes the conversation feel unhurried. It notices what the client says, but also what the plan, the light and the proportions are quietly saying.
A workshop behind the promise
Changing a fabric or reducing a standard width is useful, but it is not the full meaning of custom. The structure, seat depth, arm proportion, wardrobe internals, joinery and finish should all be open to thoughtful change when the home requires it.
Ask where the piece will be made, who translates the design into workshop information, and who checks it before dispatch. The answer reveals whether the showroom is selling a possibility or genuinely controlling the making.
Luxury in the details you do not immediately see
The first impression may come from silhouette and fabric, but lasting quality often sits underneath: the internal structure, density and layering of comfort, the way a drawer closes, the finish inside a wardrobe and the care given to an edge that is touched every day.
These details do not need to shout. Their value is felt slowly, as the furniture remains comfortable, useful and composed through years of living.
Installation belongs to the design
A beautifully made piece can still feel wrong if it reaches site damaged, cannot pass through the staircase or is fitted carelessly. Access, packing, assembly and final alignment are design responsibilities because they decide how the client finally experiences the work.
Before choosing a studio, ask who remains present after the workshop is finished. Accountability should travel with the furniture.

Minnoli is a founder-led furniture studio in Kolkata, shaped around personal conversation and responsible making since 2004. The display at Karnani Estate is not meant to prescribe one look. It allows clients to sit, touch, open, question and understand what can be created for their own home.
From there, the work may become a sofa, a wardrobe, a bed, a dining table or a larger collection across the residence. What connects it is not a fixed style. It is the intention that every piece should feel natural to the place it finally belongs.
